about

The encounter of Pampas plains and Atlantic ocean gives place to a complex and dynamic ecosystem: the Bahía Blanca estuary. The continent rises above the sea creating several islands which define a transition between terrestrial and marine ecosystems. This album contains soundscapes and field recordings made during the artistic residence “Isla Invisible 2018” organized by the Nature Reserve “Islote de la Gaviota Cangrejera” and the Museum “Ferrowhite”. A group of people made up of artists, biologists and rangers camped in one of these islands, which seems to be invisible to a society that is settled a few kilometers away. Thousands of gulls temporarily inhabit the coasts of this island in order to reproduce and, together with other coastal birds, they conform a key part of the island soundscape. At twilight, crab stridulations in the intertidal zone highlight another key element of the ecosystem. The island is the place for a particular interaction between biological, geophysical and anthropic elements, that together build a unique sonic identity: an island that is invisible to society but receives permanently its influence, and that has a key role in a complex ecosystem that is threatened by global change. These recordings give evidence to its invisible nature.

Pepi Amodeo Argentina

As a biologist and sound artist I look forward to the interaction between science and arts through sounds. I explore sounds in different nature-culture interaction scenarios, with focus on biodiversity and soundscapes as key elements of natural and cultural heritage. Contemplation, field recording, analysis and digital processing, allow me to re-interpret those sounds in different contexts. ... more
